This piece was inspired by a variety of music such as Broadway musicals French cancan and circus marches. A special rhythm pattern called “Ipponjime” (or “Sanbonjime”) is played by the percussion (3 + 3 + 3 + 1) in the first four measures.This is how people freely clap their hands when ceremonies or parties end in Japan. This custom of clapping hands reflects Japanese people’s spirit to readily move on to the next step. As the infectious work comes to its exciting conclusion every player shouts “yeah!”ensuring you will definitely hear rapturous applause!

The goddess of joy Uzume succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu’s curiosity and with her appearance the light on earth returns. This fantastic new original work will make a much needed addition to the advanced repertoire for saxophone and concert band. A version for saxophone and piano is also available.

While composing it Jacob de Haan was inspired by a familiar situation: a child caught doing something mischievous such as taking another child’s toy and trying to get away with it. Easter Fantasy- Fantasia di Pasqua est une fantaisie basée sur des mélodies chorales pascales issues de la Renaissance. Un quatuor (cuivres/bois) joue un rôle primordial dans le développement de la pièce. La musique pascale étant essentiellement destinée à être interprétée dans un lieu de culte le compositeur préconise de placer le quatuor sur le balcon. L’effet de double chœur ainsi créé donne à la pièce un caractère varié et divertissant.

Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song) Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit) Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung which literally means “The swaying of the watercress ” Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert.

This stately opening work begins in the low register with a broad main theme from the low brass immediately setting the tone. Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This work makes truly creative use of sound without great virtuosity or complexity but maintains a good balance between static and dynamic elements.

Little Suite for Flexible Band-This short “cool” suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. This wonderful suite has been composed especially for youth musicians and they will all gain great pleasure from performing it.

Farewell Song has been taken from Der Trompetervon Säckingen by Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884 thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today only the farewell song called JungWerner’s Abschied also known as Behüt’ dich Gott has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. He felt itwas appropriate to entrustthe melody of this song originally written for tenorvoice to the baritone or euphonium.

As the title suggests Spanish Overture has a strong Spanish character. The music in this overture is full of quintessential Spanish colours. Following a fluid and spontaneous development which moves between major and minor keys a slow passage with a calm and peaceful melodic line is presented. The finale of this passionate work recalls the initial theme now presented in all its splendour.

Purcell a composé ce thème brillant pour la musique de scène de la pièce Abdelazer ou la revanche du Maure (1693) d’Aphra Behn. Presque trois siècles plus tard Benjamin Britten l’introduisit dans son œuvre symphonique The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (désignée souvent par son sous-titre Variation & Fugue sur un Thème de Purcell ) une partition pour un film documentaire sorte de visite guidée des instruments de l’orchestre. A hollowed out pumpkin with a face carved into it called a jack-o-lantern is a traditional symbol of Halloween. Some jack-o-lanterns have scary faces while others have fun whimsical faces. The trombones in this piece represent the jack-o-lanterns with their whimsical faces—hence the title The Funny Pumpkins. Your trombone section will have immense fun with this new solo feature.
