Three Moods for Bass Clarinet and Symphonic Band-At last the bass clarinet can shine in this major new solo work for bass clarinet and concert band. This composition begins with a rather mysterious opening passage with atmospheric sounds and effects. The soloist plays - preferably backstage - a number of fragments and melodic patterns without actually “starting” the piece. After this somewhat hesitant introduction a lively cheerful allegro entitled Con Giocondita (with joy) bursts out. It is swarming with irregular meters changing tempos and polyrhythm through which the listeners (and sometimes also the musicians) constantly get the feeling that they are being tossed around. The second movement brings rest andpeace making careful use of sound colours. The upbeat finale titled Con Allegria (with cheerfulness) is the most significant movement for the soloist. This is a challenging piece of music that demands great virtuosity but with the correct performer it will be a real highpoint in any concert..

In 1880 Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

It was written for the opening ceremony of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf (Allgäu Germany) and can be played in four different versions depending on your needs or the players available. You can use a complete version a short fanfare played just by cornets trombones and timpani a double fanfare (extended with tutti-band) or a fanfare version followed by the hymn. Fanfare and Hymn is an extremely practical and versatile ceremonial opening piece.

This delightful new composition takes its inspiration from the classic French swash buckling tale of Cyrano de Bergerac and his fight to win the love of the beautiful maiden Roxane. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane) dramatic episodes as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour to sing and to play like virtuosi. Medley of Three Russian Love Songs-A characteristic of many Russian folksongs is the emotion that they contain - sometimes exceptionally fierce sometimes in contrast resigned and melancholic. This makes the music captivating and gives it its special distinctive atmosphere. The same can also be said for From Russia with Love in which Roland Kernen has made use of three beautiful Russian love songs. In the cheerful and stirring Kalinka the singer tells of a girl whom he fell head over heals in love with so much so that she is always on his mind. Lutshje Bulo is the story of a man who wants to break up with his girlfriend and in Otschi Tschornije attention is focused on a dangerous woman who can seduce many menwith her piercing black eyes.

“Yamanobe no Michi” (road at the foot of a mountain) is located east of the Yamato basin. It is the oldest road in Japan and is about 35km (21.5 miles) long. The oldest market and positions used for trading merchandise over the centuries are found along this road. While composing this work the composer visualised the activity along “Yamanobe no Michi” imagining the solemn procession of the aristocracy as well as the chaos that traffic often presents. He also kept in mind the tumultuous history that this road has seen and still represents today.

from the opera Rinaldo van Georg Friedrich Händel-Let Me Weep (‘Lascia ch’io pianga’) is an aria from Handel’s opera ‘Rinaldo’. According to reports he composed the music for the complete opera in just 14 days using many melodies from earlier works. The melody of this wonderful aria is known all over the world and this arrangement by Jacob de Haan retains all the passion of the original.

Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne Germany but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly however he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then these pieces have remained part of the composition. This appealing transcription includes the famous Can Can which is sure to get your audience high kicking in the aisles!
