This German-born composer and conductor came to the United States at the outbreak of World War II when he was just 11. He studied with Walter Piston Paul Hindemith and Aaron Copland among others and currently teaches composition at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. This rhythmically challenging 'Sonatina' features a 'fast and brilliant' first movement a 'slow and very gently moving' second and a finale which dispenses with bar-lines entirely until the last moments.

La Favorita written in France by the Italian composer Donizetti is a tragedy built around the ill-fated love affair between the king's mistress Léonor and a young novice monk Fernand who not knowing her true identity betrays his vows to pursue her. Frustrated by circumstance obligation and misunderstanding their love is realized only at her death. La Favorite was a favorite at the Paris Opéra performed consistently until the earlytwentieth century. Since that time it has become more widely known in its Italian translation. This edition of the libretto is in both Italian and English.

Italian/English. Gluck's 'Orfeo et Euridice' was one of three operas composed by Gluck in an attempt to reform the Italian opera seria. The libretto is noble and grand and this must have inspired Gluck for his approach to the score is alsomonumental as well as orchestral in nature. The opera opens after the death of Euridice to a funereal choral tableau which is pierced by the cries of the anguished Orfeo. Huge dramatic choruses of shades and furiescontrast starkly with the solo recitatives and arias of Orfeo as he searches for Euridice. The third act is particularly beautiful as Gluck and Calzabigi turn the shade of Euridice into a complex lover and wife unwilling tofollow her husband blindly out of Hades even though she has been called back to life. Her arguments and pleadings her passion and confusion create the torment in Orfeo that results in her being sent back to hell.
