Italian/English. Translated by Martin. The 1815 masterpiece 'Il Barbiere Di Siviglia' is widely considered the greatest of comic operas. The libretto of 'The Barber of Seville' was adapted by Cesore Sterbini from the first of a trilogy of plays by the French dramatist Beaumarchais considered highly subversive for their depiction of nobility as buffoons dependant on and manipulated by their wily servants. The plot involves the efforts of the amorous young Count Almaviva to woo and win the lovely Rosina in the process outwitting her ward Dr. Bartolo who fancies her for himself. Rosina's aria 'Una voce poco fa' is probably the most popular of all coloratura arias. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Scoreand is in Italian with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin and notes and essays Robert Laerence and Estelle Liebling.

German/English. Translated by MacFarren. Wagner completed the first version of the opera in 1845 during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the royal court of Dresden but he continued to redraft and revise it for the rest of his life. The setting is medieval Germany: the minstrel Tannhauser has fallen into sin with the goddess Venus but after a year in a moment of realisation he demands to leave. He finds himself near his home and is reunited with Elisabeth a girl he once loved. Elisabeth's uncle the landgrave organises a singing competition between Tannhauser and Wolfram who also loves her. Wolfram's song is simple and moving while Tannhauser confused by Venus outrages the audience by singing of profane love.He is banished to Rome on a pilgrimage to seek redemption and Elisabeth follows him with Wolfram. After much searching she gives up and dies just missing Tannhauser who Wolfram discovers creeping back to Venus the Pope having said that it was as impossible for him to be forgiven as for his staff to sprout flowers. Tannhauser sees Elisabeth and casts himself to die by her coffin and the Pope's staff bursts into bloom. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score edited and translated into English by Natalia MacFarren.

Siegfried is the third of the four operas that constitute Richard Wagner ’s ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’ (The Ring of the Nibelung). Wagner wrote the libretto and music for this cycle of four epic operas over the course of about twenty-six years from 1848 to 1874. The Ring premiered at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus over 4 days from 13 to 17 August 1876. This part of the cycle is primarily inspired by the story of the legendary hero Sigurd in Norse mythology. Siegfried is a man without fear and he expresses to his foster father Mime his wish to learn to fear. Mime tells him that the wise learn fear quickly but the stupid find it moredifficult. Siegfried learns fear when he discovers the sleeping Brünnhilde in Act 3. G. Schirmer Opera Score Editions presents Richard Wagner ’s Siegfried with both the original German lyrics and in English translation (translated by Frederick Jameson). The Orchestra parts have been transcribed into a Piano accompaniment and dramatisation instructions added where relevant. The Voice parts which are true to the original feature chorus solo and duet sections of the characters: Siegfried (Tenor) Mime (Tenor) The Wanderer (Bass) Alberich (Bass) Fafner (Bass) Erda (Alto) and Brunhilde (Soprano).

At the time this Concerto was written the valve horn - the forerunner of today's French Horn - had not been developed and the player had to insert different lengths of tubing to play in different keys and use hand stopping to play any notes that were not in the harmonic series. Considering this this piece must have been extremely difficult when written - it is rather less so with a modern horn but still a challenge. This is the Great Performers Edition edited by Barry Tuckwell. It contains parts for Horn in F and also for Horn in D.
