Italian/English. Translated by Fuchs. Scribe's libretto to Verdi's 'A Masked Ball' concerns the real-life assassination of King Gustave III of Sweden at a masked ball in 1792 but adds a love story to what was probably a political murder. The King Ricardo is in love with Amelia wife of his friend Renato. Renato warns the King to beware a plot to kill him. The King visits Ulrica the mystic and she says he will die by the next friendly hand he shakes. While he is there Amelia (in disguise) also visits Ulrica to ask for a magic herb to rid her of her illicit love for Ricardo. She leaves to see it pursued by the King but as he leaves Renato enters and the two shake hands. At the gallows Ricardo and Ameliaspeak of their love but are found by Renato who thinks he has been betrayed. He prepares to kill Amelia but relents and turns on the King joining the conspirators and being chosen to commit the murder. The ball begins Amelia urges the King (who meanwhile has resolved to give her up) to leave but he refuses and is stabbed. Too late does Renato realise the innocence of the lovers and he is overcome by remorse. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English version by Peter Paul Fuchs.

English Only. Translated by Farguhart. Bedrich Smetana's The Bartered Bride dates from the happiest most musically fulfilling period in the composer's life and draws inspiration from Czech folk music. The action takes place to the backdrop of a visiting circus. Marenka and Jenik’s love for each other seems doomed as Marenka's father has brokered her in marriage to Vasek. Marenka meets Vasek – who doesn't realize who she is – and dissuades him from the marriage; meanwhile the marriage broker Kecal persuades Jenik to accept marriage to a wealthy girl; he agrees on condition that Marenka marry the son of Tobias Micha. Vasek forsakes the arranged marriage in pursuit of a circus dancer; Marenka remains scornful ofJenik's seeming betrayal. Jenik's plan becomes clear in the final scene when he is revealed to be Micha's long-lost elder son. All of the mismatched couples are sorted out and a family restored in a joyous finale. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score with English text by Marian Farquhar.

One Piano Four Hands. Gazebo Dances was originally written as a set of four-hand pieces dedicated to certain of my pianist friends. I later arranged the suite for orchestra and for concert band and it is from the latter version that the title is drawn. The title Gazebo Dances was suggested by the pavilions often seen on village greens in town throughout the countryside where public band concerts are givenon summer evenings. The delights of that sort of entertainment are portrayed in this set of dances which begins with a Rossini-like Overture followed by a rather peg-legged Waltz a long-lined Adagio and finally a Tarantella. Contents: Cortege œ D'un Jardin Clair œ D'un Vieux Jardin. Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life - she died at 25 - and her music stands in the main line of French music exemplified by Faure somewhat tinged with the influence of Debussy's Impressionism. It is generally beautiful delicately coloured and touching. These 'Three Pieces For Piano' display her very personal musical signature. The first piece D'un Vieux Jardin (Of an Old Garden) conjures up mystery and nostalgia. 'D'un Jardin Clair (Of a Clear/Bright Garden) has moremovement and is bathed in light. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

English Only. The first opera written for television 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' has become the most frequently performed opera of all time with over five hundred performances annually across the world. Menotti's take on the Christmas story focuses on Amahl a young handicapped boy and his mother who are visited by three Kings -- Balthazar Melchior and Kaspar -- who are on their way to find Jesus. The Kings stay the night during which Amahl's mother tries to steal some of the Kings' gold and is caught in the act. Melchior suggests that she keep the gold because the child they are visiting will rule his kingdom with love not riches. Amahl's mother gives back the gold wishing she had something to give of her own. Amahl offers his crutch as a gift and suddenly is able to walk. He decides to follow the Kings so that he himself may give his crutch to the Christ child. The work is ideal for an amateur performance (for example a secondary school or a local dramatic society) since all the action takes place in one act and one place and the work calls for limited adaptable musical forces. It also gives each principal a chance to shine either in a solo or an ensemble. This book contains the Chorus parts only.

Italian/English. Translated by Giacosa/Illica. In 'Tosca' Puccini explored the dark side of human emotion a marked change from the late-Romantic sentimentality of 'La Boheme'. Also in contrast to 'La Bohème' where the villain was fate and so the stage action was minimal both heros and villains are humans who struggle on stage and the clashes are always between single individuals. It is a story of cheating and doubt - nothing seems honest and direct even love is troubled by jealousy. Thisis the Schirmer Ediiton of the Libretto in the original Italian with an English translation by John Gutman.
