Bks. I-IV - Complete-The life of Johann Baptist Cramer furnishes a striking illustration of the career of a man who having exceptionally solid acquirements has bequeathed to posterity his most valuable knowledge in an enduring form. Both as aprofessional musician and as a businessman he enjoyed uninterrupted prosperity. Born at Mannheim Germany on February 24 1771 of musical German lineage - his father being a distinguished violinist his grandfather a notedflautist - he was taken the following year to London where his father settled permanently. Cramer's Studies for Pianoforte are those of his works wherein the composer yet lives and labors among us. They are still looked upon asindispensable.

Griffes: Volume 3 is the final volume of the collected vocal works of the American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884 - 1920). It has been edited by Donna Anderson aforemost expert on his life and works. The 16 songs in this volume allow the interested musician to track Griffes’ compositional style as it changed throughout his career. His early Romantic style is typified by Auf Geheimem Waldespfade which was first published in 1909 but dates from 1903-1907 when he was studying in Berlin. His German influences disappeared around 1912 and he drifted towards French impressionism whileexploring influences from the Far East. The 3 Javanese songs Hampelas Kinanti and Djakoan (c. 1917) were probably the last songs he wrote before his life was cut tragically short by influenza at the age of35. He remains the prominent American composer from the turn of the last century.

This piece was commissioned by the King'Singers and may be performed by a Men's Choir with the top parts in falsetto or as a mixed ensemble. Commissioned by the BBC Singers for mixed voices a cappella. It is a mocking self-deprecatory portrait written in 1981. In this piece a distraught composer moans as he sits in front of a blank page with an empty head. A flybuzzes around and he calls out to his neighbors and his dog for comfort. Gian-Carlo Menotti's piece effectively conveyed the feeling you get when doing something extremely difficult like writing a law school application essay or trying to compose the perfect piece of music.
