Transeamus is a wonderful adaptation of the famous Christmas song Let us go to Bethlehem. The work is eminently suitable as the opening theme of your Christmas concert. The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody the hymnresounds in full glory.

Robert Frank made a wonderful arrangement of this Christmas carol for Bb or Eb soloist and fanfare band which sounds excellent especially on alto saxophone.

Fanitullen is a lively beautiful ‘Sl?tt’ i.e. an old Norwegian melody which is played on a traditional ‘Hardingfele’ (Hardanger fiddle). Because of its violent rhythm and exciting character playing a Fanitullen for a long time was considered improper. It was believed that a person playing this melody would come under the influence of the devil. Therefore Fanitullen could be regarded as a kind of Rock’n Roll from the 18th century. Tom Brevik’s adaptation is based on a composition for piano by Ole Olsen (1850-1927) Fanitullen is een levendige mooie ‘Sl?tt’ een oude Noorse melodie die gespeeld word op een traditionele ‘Hardingfele’ (Hardanger viool). Rondeau of the Shepherds so ran the official title of the famous Dutch Christmas carol ‘Midden in de winternacht’. In 1948 wrote Dutch poet and writer Harry Prenen this text. The melody is known by the 17th/18th- century organ composers of suites Daquin Balbastre and Dandrieu. Rondeau of the Shepherds was subtitled Catalan Christmas Carol. The song itself is because its origins in a Spanish (Catalan probably) Christmas song from the late Middle Ages El Desembre congelat. The motives of this song (shepherds flutes drums) demonstrate knowledge of the Bible and give a picture of the late medieval Christmas experience. . Perfect as an uptempo intermezzoin a church service.

In the year 1368 a rapacious character takes up residence in the castle of Rijnesteyn at Cothen. He is Johan bastard son of the Bishop of Utrecht.Round this now so peaceful castle eventful matters are enacted. In part one Johan and Willem Gulik of Guelders set out to do battle against King Charles of France. On their return in part two Johan captures two French goldsmiths in Hainault and incarcerates them at Castle Rijnesteyn. Part three is a musical representation of a courtly ballet in medieval style. The final part relates how Jan van Rijnesteyn goes to war against Hendrik van Vianen and Lord of 'Goy Viscount of Utrecht.Jan loots hispossessions and threathens to conquer all. In het jaar 1368 betrekt een roofzuchtig heerschap het kasteel Reijnestein te Cothen.Het is Johan de bastaardzoon van de Utrechtse bisschop. Rond dit nu zo vredig gelegen ridderslot hebben zich toen geruchtmakende taferelen afgespeeld. In het eerste deel trekt Johan met Willem Gullik de hertog van Gelre ten strijde tegen koning Karel van Frankrijk. De terugreis speelt zich af in het tweede deel. Tijdens deze reis neemt Johan in Henegouwen twee Franse goudsmeden gevangen en sluit ze op in de kerker van slot Rijnesteyn. Deel 3 is de muzikale weergave van een hoofs ballet in middeleeuwse stijl. In het laatste deel wordt verteld hoe Jan van Rijnesteyn in 1396 ten strijde trekt tegen Hendrik van Vianen en de heer van't Goy burggraaf van Utrecht. Jan plundert diens goederen en dreigt diens bezittingen te veroveren.

New Waves is a special composition. Although contemporary but still attractive to musicians and listeners. Norwegian composer Aagaard-Nilsen has failed in a special way to add new elements to the contemporary wind music. Original exciting rhythms and contrasting harmonies make this composition enjoyable and challenging together. Interrupted by a slow middle section New Waves may be seen as five minutes jazz rock and funk optima forma! New Waves is een bijzondere compositie. Weliswaar eigentijds maar toch aantrekkelijk voor muzikanten en luisteraars. De Noorse componist Aagaard-Nilsen is er op bijzondere wijze in geslaagd nieuwe elementen toe te voegen aan dehedendaagse blaasmuziek. Oorspronkelijke ritmes en spannende contrastrijke samenklanken maken het spelen van dit werk plezierig en uitdagend tegelijk. Onderbroken door een langzaam middendeel kan New Waves beschouwd worden als vijf minuten jazz rock en funk optima forma!

The Innocent Condemned tells of the so-called buck riders (bokkerijders) who in the middle of the 18th Century caused mayhem in the area around Limburg. Calmer passages in the music depict the fear of the locals while a vivo furioso describes a night raid and powerful drum sounds together with emotional musical lines illustrate the execution of an innocent. A gripping piece of history caught in music!

On Wings of Liberty shows us that Rob Goorhuis one of Holland's greatest contemporary composers of music for wind instruments is a natural when it comes to writing concert marches. His first work of this type is suitable for just about every event.

Commissioned by Manger School Band and their conductor (at that time) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. He wanted a calm slow piece of music. Nocturne means 'night music'. It does not reflect a particular dream but the feeling you get when you¬?re day-dreaming: you are in the middle of beeing awake and asleep. Geschreven in opdracht van Manger School Band en hun dirigent (op dat moment) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. Hij wilde een rustig langzaam stuk muziek. Nocturne betekent 'nacht muziek'. Het gaat dus niet een bepaalde droom maar het gevoel dat je krijgt wanneer je aan het dagdromen bent: je bent in het midden van wakker zijn en slapen.

This beautiful and varied solo work full of lyricism and technique is a challenge for every euphonium player. Symphonic Rhapsody is not just a solo with an accompaniment but certainly a fascinating interplay between solo and orchestra. The theme exposed by the euphonium is known as Old Chariot and this theme is varied throughout the piece. Dit fraaie en gevarieerde solowerk vol lyriek en techniek is een uitdaging voor iedere euphoniumblazer. De 'Symphonic Rhapsody' is ook niet enkel een solo met een begeleiding maar wel degelijk een boeiend samenspel tussen solo en orkest. Het thema dat na 25 maten door de euphonium wordt voorgedragen is bekendonder de naam 'Old Chariot' en op dit thema wordt gedurende het werk gevarieerd.

In this four-movement suite every moment sings of a different type of French wine. All these wines have their origins in the little French village of Savigny-les-Beaune in Burgundy and are made by wine-grower Pierre Guillemot. It was theexcellent quality of the wines that inspired Rob Goorhuis into writing this composition. The first three movements deal with three red wines made of the Pinot Noir grape which all bear the Premier Cru designation. The final movement wasinspired by a white wine made of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. In the nature of their musical material the various movements not only give a characterisation of the taste of the wines. they also hint at impressions of the respective vineyards andtheir surroundings. 1st Movement Les Narbantons - Giocoso 2nd Movement Les Jarrons - Gracioso 3rd Movement Les Serpentieres - Festivo 4rd Movement Dessus des Golardes - Vivaci.
