Concerto for Trombone was written especially for Jörgen van Rijen the solo trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. It is a composition without a story consisting of four overlapping parts. The solo part was not written for Jörgen van Rijen technical skills but rather for his expressive technique in the higher registers. According to Jan Bosveld Jörgen van Rijen has additional merits that distinguish him from all other trombonists. Concerto for Trombone was premiered at the International Music Festival in Saas-Fee Switzerland. The Repräsentations Orchester des Schweizer Armeespiel conducted by Christopher Walter accompanied him. This composition was made financially possible by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI) department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem The Netherlands. Special thanks goes to mr. Bert Aalders director of the MUI.

‘Music’ by John Miles was one of Blackstone’s favourite numbers. With completely different notes but holding on to the same form and atmosphere the latter has tried to write an attractive composition for both young and old. Gate 11 refers to the ever agitated and noisy scenes at an airport especially during check-in. Yet there are also passengers who wait patiently letting their thoughts range at will looking forward to meeting a loved one at the end of their journey.

A ballad that hints at Australia where its composer used to live for a couple of years. It was the friendliness of both its human and animal inhabitants that inspired him to write this little paragon of sonority destined to become a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. Its singing melody is accompanied by an altogether infectuous little motif.

‘Christmas Colours’ is a palette consisting of several Christmas songs. Bruce Fraser has mainly used the colours green (the colour of holly) and white (the colour of snow). This composition begins with the chiming of festive bells - if you listen well however you can already hear short fragments from 'The Holly and the Ivy' whose entire melody is finally played alternated with 'The Sussex Carol'. After this the pace slows down and the stately 'See amid the Winter Snow' sounds but parts from 'Jingle Bells' and 'Silent Night' can also be heard. Then after walking under 'The Holly and the Ivy' once again the celebration of Christmas may begin!
