A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. Onward Christian Soldiers was the result. It soon became very popular though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular for current generations again for years. Onward!

‘Rhapsody for Tienhoven’ is a short concert for saxophone and fanfare band. The solo part in its instrumentation distinguishes itself from the other saxophone solos. The soloist should be able to play both the alto and soprano saxophone. The piece consists of four parts which almost blend into one another. A four-tone motif (which is played a number of times by the soloist at the beginning) has been taken as the point of departure for this composition. This motif has been worked out in different ways and can be heard in a swing rhythm in the final part. This piece exacts a high standard of the soloist’s technical skills. The ‘Rhapsody forTienhoven’ was originally written for the fanfare band ‘Soli Deo Gloria’ from Tienhoven. ‘Rhapsody for Tienhoven’ is een klein concert voor saxofoon en fanfare-orkest. De solopartij onderscheidt zich qua instrumentatie van andere saxofoon-solo’s. De solist(e) moet zowel altsaxofoon als sopraansaxofoon spelen. Het stuk bestaat uit vier deeltjes die vrijwel in elkaar overlopen. Een vier-tonig motief (wordt in het begin een aantal malen door de solist gespeeld) is het uitgangspunt van deze compositie. Dit motief wordt op verschillende manieren uitgewerkt en wordt in het slot gedeelte ten tonele gevoerd in een swingritme. Dit werk stelt hoge eisen aan de technische vaardigheden van de solist.

In this work the Dutch composer Marc van Delft attempts to bring together two parties (former friends) after they have grown inexplicably apart. For this reason he calls in the help (Invocation) from the medium of music. At first 'Invocation' radiates a sense of serene calme from which the composer gradually creates an atmosphere resembling a conversation. Half-way there is an increase of suspense ending once again in calm. The listener remains uncertain however regarding the finish. In dit werk probeert de Nederlandse componist Marc van Delft twee partijen samen te brengen (vroegere vrienden) nadat ze op onverklaarbare wijze uit elkaar zijn gegroeid. Daaromroept hij de hulp in (Invocation) van het medium muziek. In het begin straalt 'Invocation' een gevoel van serene rust uit waaruit de componist geleidelijk een sfeer creëert die lijkt op een gesprek. Halverwege is er een toename van de spanning die weer in rust eindigt. De luisteraar blijft echter onzeker over de afloop.

The composer: A short concert-opener where I use Norwegian folk-tunes. I wanted to create a short musical picture of the Vikings running from the seashore towards some people they wanted to fight down. They used to drink something made of mushrooms and became very wild. They didn¬?t feel any pain they didn¬?t feel any fear. They where called the Berserkings!

The weather inspired Albert Dam to compose Weather Report. The three parts Windy (rock) Misty (ballad) and Sunny (calypso) want to make us believe that the weather will be changeable. Stable or not the music is solid as a rock.

A thoroughly gripping melody of Irish descent constitutes the basis on which this exceedingly beautiful little piece of music rests. Down by the Salley Gardens is a guaranteed heartbreaker on your next concert. Since the lyrics of this Irish traditional are also supplied with the set a combination of band with solo voice or even choir is a definite possibility. The Arranger: Leafing through a song-book containing traditionals etc. I was immediately struck by this song and its exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric melody. I simply had to do something with it. Een meeslepende traditional van Ierse komaf staat aan de basis van dit wonderschone werkje. Down bythe Salley Gardens belooft een hartenbreker te worden op uw eerstvolgende concert. De tekst van deze Ierse traditional wordt meegeleverd en daarmee is een combinatie met zang ook zeer goed mogelijk. De arrangeur: Bladerend door een liedboek met traditionals enz. was ik meteen getroffen door dit nummer en zijn uitzonderlijk mooie en sfeervolle melodie. Ik moest gewoon iets mee doen.
