An Alpine Reflexion-In Homeland Austrian composer Otto M. Schwarz has set to music the beauty of his own country in a musical monument. The work describes the area of Hohe Tauern (High Tauern) which in 1913 following the American model was declared the firstnational park in Europe. In Schwarz’s music it’s easy to hear how the ancient mountains glaciers native wildlife and the famous Krimml waterfalls offer an impressive natural spectacle that needs to be protected.

Dance from the East is a fiery oriental dance. It starts with an imposing introduction with the feel of a solemn lament and seamlessly merges into a dance. The piece then builds gradually through an incessant accelerando and crescendo until it reaches a fervent passion captivating every listener.

The Imperial Royal State Railways was the first rail company in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Imperial Overture tells the tale of a tourist who visits Austria and travels by rail across Austria. During his journey the train passes through the Vienna Woods and the beautiful scenery of Lower and Upper Austria stopping for a short while in Wels before reaching Salzburg Mozart’s home town.

The “Teufelsbrücke” (devil’s bridge) is a very old bridge connecting the Göschenen and Andermatt valleys in the canton of Uri central Switzerland. Legend has it that in the 13th century the people of Uri made a pact with the devil to build a bridge across the canyon. When the people only delivered a goat in payment of the soul demanded by the devil he was angry and decided to knock down the bridge. An old woman painted the sign of a cross on the rock the devil was intending to destroy the bridge with and the devil unable to lift it disappeared forever. The rock remains to this day at the northern entry of the Gotthard tunnel.

Lamenti (Lamentations) est un chant lent et profondément mélancolique originaire des Marches une région d'Italie centrale. La mélodie originale est accompagnée d’un texte écrit en dialecte :« Mon bien-aimé m’a dit qu’il allait mourir.Pour lui faire plaisir je veux mourir aussi.Trouvez quelqu’un qui chantera et jouera pour moi ;Trouvez quelqu’un qui m’enterrera… »Le thème original est exposé dans les mesures d’ouverture. Il évolue dans un environnement harmonique aux contours indéfinis et vagues. Viennent ensuite trois variations contrastantes et contrastées. Dans la première variation ( Allegro con fuoco ) le thème a subi des modifications rythmiques etharmoniques. Il se présente désormais sous la forme d’une danse d’abord en 7/8 puis en 6/8. La deuxième variation ( Lento Misterioso ) s’apparente à une marche funèbre jouée en canon. La troisième et dernière variation ( Scherzo Vivace ) est vive et brillante.

The entrance into the “green hell” turns out to be very dangerous with wild monkeys and the roaring of elephants accompanying our way through the dark forest. There seems to be something lurking behind every tree and all of a sudden a horde of savage cannibals appears. A wild hunt sets off and we escape at the last second by jumping from a cliff into the savage water below. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing. This is a journey of no return….
