Sparkling Overture was written to celebrate the centenary of the Swiss brass band La Musique Militaire de Rougemont. This energetic and dynamic piece opens with a festive and resolutely positive fanfare. The much more tranquil and lilting second theme is a magnificent chorale which is then followed by a brilliant return of the first motif. Used as a theme tune this piece will be ideal as a contrasting joyful and sparkling concert opening. Out of Space – if you were to gaze at the Tyrol from outer space you would be staring into the very heart of Europe. Right in the middle lies the beautiful town of Haiming which is celebrating its 750th birthday in 2019. Haiming is famous in the Tyrol for its fruit production—especially for apples. Following a calm introductory passage admiring the view of Europe from outer space we launch into a cheerful Allegro Festivo which captures the joyful celebration to mark Haiming’s 750 year milestone. A Musical Memorial-Today Voestalpine is a company specialising in technology and industrial goods. Founded nearly 150 years ago it has played an important role in the steel and iron industry throughout its history. The company displays an impressive “Contemporary History Exhibition 1938-1945” commemorating the victims of National Socialist forced labour in the factory during WWII. ‘Iron Ring’ refers to the company logo during that time. This work is a symphonic poem-like composition describing different aspects of the companies’ history in four musical scenes. It is a dramatic breathtaking and impressive piece of music that will leave no one untouched. The piece features severalimpressive solos for a cello. for Solo Bb Euphonium (or Baritone ad lib.) and Concert Band- Reverie is a small piece of music for a euphonium player. A dear friend and colleague of mine commissioned the work to whom Reverie is also dedicated. The work commences with a dream-like melody and then explores various emotions to showcase its virtuosic capabilities.

Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one in a moderatetempo without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement resulting in a powerful climax. The composition ends with the Gopak: a rousing dance.

The Haunter of the Dark is based on a tale by the author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) about a deserted church where according to an old legend a monster had been lying low for years.A scientist who studies ancient religions visits this church. Besides some ancient writings he discovers a box which contains a luminous stone. Every time the stone sheds its light the scientist experiences all sorts of weird visions.The church in the tale actually exists and can be found in Providence (USA). Franco Cesarini has visited it and sketches the mysterious and occult atmosphere in The Haunter of the Dark.

Piotta is a lively 6/8 march from well-known concert band composer Franco Cesarini. This exciting and musically witty piece is as impressive rhythmically as it is melodically and will make for an elegant opening to any concert.

With Convergents Franco Cesarini has succeeded in composing a piece suitable for both concerts or contests which whilst not being too difficult still has the feel of a major work. This extremely rhythmical piece is built upon three themes which after being introduced in turn finally converge into the triumphal finale of the work. This scintillating workwill be a definite enrichment to the repertoire of your concert band.
