En 1980 le pianiste et compositeur italien Gian Piero Reverberi fonde l’ensemble Rondò Veneziano. Le style musical directement inspiré de la musique baroque et associé à des instruments modernes (batterie guitare basse synthé) séduit immédiatement. Concerto est basée tant pour la forme que pour l’harmonisation sur les principes du concerto baroque italien. L’adjonction d’un rythme emprunté à la musique pop apporte une touche énergique et dansante.

Pour composer cette œuvre monumentale Franco Cesarini s’est inspiré de trois mosaïques byzantines qui ornent des églises de Venise et de Palerme et représentent des passages de l’Évangile selon Matthieu. Les motifs musicaux développés dans les trois tableaux de la composition sont empruntés à des chants grégoriens. 1. La Naissance de Jésus-Christ : Les Mages à Bethléem : “[…] l’étoile qu’ils avaient vue en Orient les précédait ; arrivée au-dessus (du lieu) où était le petit enfant elle s’arrêta. À la vue de l’étoile ils éprouvèrent une très grande joie.” (Mt 2.9 10) / 2. Le Temple de Jérusalem : “[…] le voile du temple se déchira en deux du haut en bas la terre trembla les rochers se fendirent les tombeaux s’ouvrirent et les corps de plusieurs saints qui étaient décédés ressuscitèrent.” (Mt 27.51 52) / 3. L’Ange de la Résurrection : “[…] car un ange du Seigneur descendit du ciel vint rouler la pierre et s’assit dessus. Son aspect était comme l’éclair et son vêtement blanc comme la neige.” (Mt 28.2 3).

Aurora est le nom latin de la déesse de l’aube dans la mythologie grecque incarnant le commencement d’un jour nouveau. Dans beaucoup de cultures anciennes l’aube a un sens spirituel : la lumière du jour est victorieuse de l’obscurité de la nuit. Dans Aurora Thomas Doss donne une illustration des différentes façons de saluer les premières lueurs du jour selon les cultures et les civilisations. On entend notamment les gongs et les instruments de percussion mélodiques des moines d’Asie l’accueil passionné offert au lever du soleil dans le désert en Afrique les danses des premiers habitants du continent américain les Indiens rythmées par le battement des pieds sur lesol et l’activité industrieuse des cultures occidentales d’aujourd’hui où la dimension mystique de l’aube n’est pas perçue. Aurora reflète ces différentes atmosphères mais l’accent est placé plus particulièrement sur les sonorités orientales - la musique symbolise ainsi en premier lieu les pays du Levant.

Austrian composer Otto M. Schwarz spared no expense or amount of ingenuity when writing Glory Fanfare putting an impressive and virtuosic double chorus of trumpets at the centre of attention. Modern elements such as funky bass lines roaring riff s and a drum set create a first-class energyinfused fanfare your audience will be hard pressed to forget!

The variation form is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of musical technique. Franco Cesarini has chosen the well known French folk melody Sur le pont d'Avignon as the basis for this piece. The piece begins with a short introduction followed by the exposition and ten lively and contrasting variations. The final reminder of the main theme also included references to the famous French nursery songs J'ai du bon tabac and Alouette which bring the work to an expressive and brilliant close.

As the title implies this piece is all joy and cheerfulness. In Joyful March the themes have been combined to make a spirited work that can give each concert an elated touch. From the opening vivid melody to the softer and colourful themes of the trio Joyful March is full of joie de vivre. Its fairly simple structure makes it accessible to most brass bands.

Ouverture-In 1854 Verdi was in Paris to compose I vespri siciliani (1855) a commission from the Theatre of the Opera. The composer soon became intolerant to the requests of the French “Grand Opéra” as he considered them too restrictive and cunning. “I’ll be very happy when I have finished I vespri siciliani . An opera at the Opéra is as tiring as killing a bull. Five hours of music?…Hauf!” Verdi declared. Following the first performance the French composer Hector Berlioz wrote in the “Journal des Débats” an article that read “We have to admit that in I vespri siciliani the penetrating intensity of the melodic expression the sumptuous variety of theinstrumentation the fullness the poetical sonority of the whole the warm vivacity that shines everywhere and the passionate strength although slow in disclosing (a characteristic feature of Verdi’s talent) give the entire work a mark of greatness a sort of majestic sovereignty more underlined than in Verdi’s previous theatre productions.”

Die Farben von Tali-Tali is a thirteen-year-old Israeli girl who has grown up amidst the religious conflicts between Palestinians Christians and Jews. Thomas Doss was so touched by a poem she wrote he decided to set it to music. The poem and the music describe the world from a child’s perspective a child that has grown up with war and tries to express things she cannot yet fully understand.

Leur chanson emblématique Nowhere to Run a triomphé dans le monde entier tant pour l’histoire d’amour malheureuse qu’elle raconte que pour l'audace des percussions (tambourin et chaînes à neige) qui enveloppent la mélodie de leur battement métallique. In memoriam Anton Bruckner-Le couvent de Saint-Florian a été le lieu de travail du compositeur autrichien Anton Bruckner qui y composa plusieurs de ses grandes symphonies. Ce couvent et sa superbe église sont situés au centre d’un paysage champêtre idyllique. St. Florian Choral (“Choral de Saint-Florian”) est un hommage à Anton Bruckner dont la musique a profondément marqué Thomas Doss.

Swing into Spring makes an ideal piece for a Spring-time concert but can also be used any time during the year to bring something new and fresh to your program.

The “Teufelsbrücke” (devil’s bridge) is a very old bridge connecting the Göschenen and Andermatt valleys in the canton of Uri central Switzerland. Legend has it that in the 13th century the people of Uri made a pact with the devil to build a bridge across the canyon. When the people only delivered a goat in payment of the soul demanded by the devil he was angry and decided to knock down the bridge. An old woman painted the sign of a cross on the rock the devil was intending to destroy the bridge with and the devil unable to lift it disappeared forever. The rock remains to this day at the northern entry of the Gotthard tunnel.

for Flugel Horn and Band-This work marks yet another addition to Otto M. Schwarz’s catalogue of solo repertoire and will be especially welcome due to the rarity of solos for flugel horn! Groovy accents create an exciting contrast to the more flowing musical elements. Magic Waltzes-The genre operetta (literally meaning ‘small opera’) originated halfway through the 19th century as an antidote to the ever-lengthening opéra comique which by that time contained more and more tragic intrigues as well. In this charming work three waltz melodies from different operettas come together. First we hear ‘Lippen schweigen’ from Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) by Franz Léhar (1870-1948). Then follows ‘Ja das alles auf Ehr’ from Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) by Johann Strauss the younger (1825-1899) after which ‘Tanzen möchte ich’ from Die Czardasfürstin by Emmerich Kálmán (1882-1953) closes the medley in a cheerful way. Franz Watz has skilfullyconnected the waltzes to become a magical whole.

‘Enjoy the Music’ is the motto of Austrian composer Thomas Doss. This motto is reflected in this lively concert work in which the composer shows music is melody harmony rhythm dynamics timbre and much more. The modern yet tuneful melodies of this piece make use of all the colours of the concert band and the results speak for themselves.
