Often known as 'the blind organist from Edinburgh' Alfred Hollins was actually born in Hull. His style of organ playing was said to be both entertaining and colourful. His own compositions are often simple in structure and radiate uninhibited joy.

This selection of carols hymns and rounds has been arranged with particular care for effectiveness in performance combined with simplicity of harmony texture and compass. The mixture of old favourites and comparatively little-known items both sacred and secular makes the book suitable for a great variety of and users and it is assured to meet a need wherever people sing in harmony at Christmas time. Each song is provided with instrumental accompaniments based on the ostinato principle - short repeating melodic patterns for up to four classroom instruments. The ostinati can be learned easily by heart which enables players to concentrate on those aspects of music-making which are sometimes neglected such as dynamics speed changes careful listening to other parts and a general feeling for the music. The content is usefully divided into nursery rhymes rounds singing games songs hymns carols and number songs.

These four volumes contain all of Purcell's secular solo songs not associated with stage productions. Taken from the authoritative Purcell Society Editions the songs appear in their original keys and are most suitable for high voice.

The Lark In The Clear Air is a traditional Irish air. Since the 1800s it has been associated with a poem by the Irish writer Sir Samuel Ferguson (1810-1886) one of the founding fathers of the Irish literary revival. It has been arranged here by Edgar M. Deale for TBarB Three-part Male Voice Chorus with Piano accompaniment. It makes a perfect recital item for any Male Voice Choir. Edgar M. Deale (1902-1999) was a twentieth century Irish composer. A former chorister at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin he was largely self-taught as a composer. His output was limited to a few dozen original works and arrangements but hiscontribution to Irish music is gradually achieving the recognition it deserves.

The corresponding vocal score to this version of A Song At Evening has the order code NOV170654. It will not work with the version for Unison (SA) of solo Voice and Piano which is NOV170621.

Pleading is a song for solo voice with Piano accompaniment written in 1908. It was composed for and dedicated to the composer's great friend Lady Maud Warrender . It was published as the composer's opus 41 in three arrangements: No. 1 is for medium voice and is set in the Key of G major. Versions for low and high voices are also available. The text is from a poem by Arthur L. Salmon . Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is one of England’s best-known and most-loved composers. He was self-taught as composer coming from outside the musical and social establishment which allowed his music to be fresh and unencumbered.
