These five short works are all extracted from the excellent Little Organ Book from the Organists Charitable Trust edited by Martin Neary and first published by Novello in 2010. This is a wonderful resource of 11 mainly new works by British composers all of moderate difficulty and well-defined character. Iain Farrington's Bluesday is full of delicious harmonies with a bold climax framed by a gentle beginning and ending. David Bednall's Fanfare is a joyful work that would bea good recital opener or festival voluntary with a chance to unleash the big reeds. The simplicity of the title of Howells's Cradle Song belies a richness and warmth that make this a moving miniature. John Rutter's evening prelude from 1979 on the plainsong hymn Te lucis ante terminum is tender and clear with some surprisingly plangent harmonies. Thomas Hewitt Jones's Carnival is an outburst of festivity and bravura. All these pieces are very much worth playing though organists interested in more than two of them would be better served purchasing a copy of the original anthology which is still very well priced (Little Organ Book Novello 9781849386814 £9.95). - Sunday by Sunday

Composer Herbert Howells is most widely known for the church music he wrote toward the later part of his career though his secular works are undoing a much-deserved revaluation. But this work for baritone Voice Violin Cello and Organ dates from a much earlier stage of his life. Howells had suffered severe ill health in 1917 just at the time Babylon was written and had withdrawn from his first appointment at Salisbury Cathedral. It was also the time he wrote his Elegy full of loss and transience composed in memory of a friend killed in the First World War.The dramatic even operatic scale of emotion in By the Waters of Babylon brings the anguish of the piece right tothe fore. It is definitely a Howells composition underpinned by solid structure and displaying chromatic sensuousness. The words are one of the great lamentations and Howells has enhanced their effect in this mighty work.

John Denver became a star as a bright-eyed clear-voiced singer-songwriter in glasses and a cowboy hat. His love for the environment and his then wife Annie Martell inspired the romantic and wildly successful Annie’s Song which is said to have been written in ten minutes on a ski lift. Here it has been arranged for female SSA choir with piano accompaniment by Frank Metis.

El remanso del pitido has been commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for the London Sinfonietta Chorus who give the first performance this evening. It is a work of nostalgia a lament for the decline of steam engines - the stillness of the whistle. Based mainly on a poem by the Spanish writer Gregorio Corral. The setting is for twelve voices eight of them singing through close microphones. The work is fourth in a series of pieces derived from 13th Century homophonic Spanish cantigas and canciones. The final series of works will form a sort of song-book the composer's own accounts of early Spanish music. The idea of a song-book is contained in the title of the firstwork of the series Cancionero para una mariposa.

Composer's note: Mass Observation is a meditation on the histories of our varied ambivalent relationships with surveillance in its myriad guises. The use of technologies that sate our desires to be watched and heard (safety tracking empowerment and pride) has in some sense always been able to be weighed against our anxieties around invasions of privacy (physical and psychological harm hacking subjugation and embarrassment). The work takes its title from the British social research organisation Mass-Observation which aimed to record everyday life in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1937 Mass-Observation controversially paid investigators to anonymously record people's conversation and behaviour at work on the street and at various public occasions including public meetings sporting and religious events. Scored for chorus and percussion sextet Mass Observation ebbs and flows between various polarities (human voices and percussion instruments pitched and unpitched sounds clear and opaque tonalities) over the course of its thirteen movements. There is a ritualistic nature to the overall pacing of the work reminiscent of a liturgical mass setting. The two groups of musicians are rarely aligned: for much of the piece they watch and listen to one another in silence. Benjamin Frankel's reputation is based on the cycle of five string quartets and eight symphonies which together with the powerfully beautiful concertos for violin and for viola rather overshadow many of his other fine pieces. The Violin Concerto grew from the composer's long and close association with Max Rostal a friendship which also inspired one of Frankel's perhaps best known compositions the First Sonata for Solo Violin. Frankel's exciting Concerto For Violin And Orchestra Op.24 has been beautifully arranged for Violin with Piano Reduction by Philip G. Jones. The solo violin part is also included on a separate insert.

PANDORA: When Pandora was created by Zeus he ordered all the Gods to endow her with some of their attributes. She wasalso given a box but forbidden to open it. Her curiosity about its contents overwhelmed her - she opened it and all the evils of the world flew out. Too late she closed it but she managed to prevent the escape of Hope. 6. SELENE: The Goddess of the Moon who drives across the night sky in her chariot to visit the sleeping Endymion. She was once seduced by Pan.
