Testo Cantato In Italiano-Madama Butterfly took wing under turbulent circumstances. The premiere (Milan Teatro alla Scala 17 February 1904) was a disaster; while a second production only months later (Brescia Teatro Grande 28 May 1904) was instead a resounding success. Inthe intervening period the composer had made considerable changes to the score enough that the result qualifies as a “second version”. Still other changes were to come however as the opera toured in successive productions. The definitive version which is reflected in this edition was produced in 1906 at the Opéra Comique in Paris and published by Ricordi the following year. Puccini thus invested considerable effort into the creation of his favorite opera – and into shaping the fate of theheroine herself a manifestation of the extremes of patient waiting and steadfast love. The music is a complete and masterful expression of the pity and disillusionment that surround the figure of Cio-Cio-San: her absolute but misguided hope herpathetic pretence in the name of love her miserable demise.

La Griselda was composed and performed in Venice in the spring of 1735 for the occasion of the Ascensiontide fair (Sensa). The taskof adapting the libretto by Apostolo Zeno to the particular exigencies of the production was assigned to a young writer of comedies attached to the company led by Giuseppe Imer: Carlo Goldoni. The latter immortalized in his Mémoires hismeeting with Vivaldi and the composer’s inseparable prima donna the contralto Anna Giraud confessing to having been forced against his will to “assassinate” Zeno’s drama at the composer’s whim. La Griselda was favourably received bythe audience at the San Samuele theatre remained the sole opera by Vivaldi to be staged at a theatre owned by the powerful Grimani family. The present edition includes a synthetic introduction of the historical context the description of the mainsource employed and a choice of the critical Notes to the musical text.

The critical edition returns the text of the Stabat mater thanks to a study of a particular scientifi c authority andphilological rigor: as main source the edition is based on the autograph score (now kept in the Archives of the Abbey of Montecassino) and on a number of manuscript sources selected (among the many existing) for their greater guarantee of fi delityto the original.
