Allah hu is the central movement of a work entitled Dast be Dast (Hand to hand in friendship) which was commissioned by the American ensemble Cuatro Puntos for their violist Kevin Bishop and for Samim Zafar a student rubab player at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul. Dast be Dast celebrates the diversity of Afghan and Western music-making with both instruments exploring improvisation alongside notation controlled imitation with spontaneous elaboration and Western tonality within Afghan scales. The complete work was premiered by the dedicatees Kevin and Samim on 23 June 2014 (joined by tabla player Madhurjya Barthakur) at the French Cultural Centre inKabul. Allah hu is a meditative movement for solo viola based on a specific interpretation of the traditional melody sung as a lullaby by Veronica Doubleday in 2004. The work was recorded by Kevin Bishop for Toccata Classics (TOCC0342) on the album The Rosegarden of Light. The Cruel Mother for Voice Flute Clarinet Violin and Cello. Composed 2014 published 2016. Score included in UYMP's Firewheel Anthology (ISMN M-57036-615-6) recorded by Dark Inventions. Duration: 6-7 minutes. The murderous tale of infanticide that is told in The Cruel Mother ballad is widely known in a number of forms. It has been performed and recorded by folk singers such as Martin Carthy Maddy Prior and Bella Hardy amongst many others and inspired Down by the Greenwood Side by Harrison Birtwistle. The particular melody used in this arrangement was collected by H.E.D. Hammond in Dorset in 1907. The matter-of-fact representation of the terrible tale thatcharacterizes the tune is augmented by the quintuple metre and cheerful instrumental refrain. On 11 December 2014 several young musicians from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music were performing at the Istiqlal School home to the French Cultural Centre in Kabul. The venue was targeted by a suicide bomber with devastating results leaving a number of students (and ANIM’s founder and Director Dr. Ahmad Sarmast) with severe injuries. Despite these most challenging of circumstances ANIM continues to provide an extraordinary learning environment for all its students regardless of gender ethnicity or social circumstances. They are committed to assuring musical rights rebuilding lives through music training future music educators establishing intercultural dialogue and to reviving and preserving Afghan Music. Gulistan-e Nur: The Rosegarden of Light is dedicated with great admiration to Dr. Ahmad Sarmast and to the students and staff of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul particularly remembering those who were injured in the 11 December attack. The work is also dedicated to Kevin Bishop and members of the pioneering ensemble Cuatro Puntos who are dedicated to global co-operation and peace through the teaching writing and performance of music worldwide. Cuatro Puntos gave the premiere on 24 September 2015 at the Lutheran Church of St. Mark Glastonbury Connecticut USA.
