This version of the famous piece Le Petit Nègre by Claude Debussy is a version transcribed for Bb Clarinet and Piano by Auguste Périer a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. First published in 1909 the piece in C major starts Allegro giusto and is an energetic cakewalk with an introduction followed by the main theme which is repeated before the piece comes to a close. Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Bb Soprano Saxophone and Piano for this edition. Based on a Cuban Contradanza it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition the Saxophone is a substitute for the Voice. French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent composer in his day best remembered for his Ave Maria and Opera Faust. 1890 saw the premiere of his Brief Mass. This work helped establish Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today Gounod was famed in his day so much so that at his funeral Camille Saint-Saëns played the Organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod 's Brief Mass proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught the attention of much of Paris when it was first performed composed for SATB choir solo voices and Organor Piano accompaniment. French organist and composer Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor where he won prizes for Piano Organ and fugue as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous Organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré 's Op.20 the Variations Sur Un Noël for Organ wascomposed in 1922. It is based on an old Noel (Pastorale) in D minor. The variations displays contrast through tonality rhythm timbre and harmony among other aspects.
