It features the movements VI and VII. This score was commissioned by Alice Tully for the celebration of the bicentenary of the USA Declaration of Independence and the whole piece lasts between 90 and 100 minutes. Messiaen got inspiration from sounds and colours and his travel to America highlighted by the Bryce Canyon very colourful really influenced his composition. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer who was passionate about Ornithology andone of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the Bird Catalogue in 7 volumes and the Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology in 7 volumes.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) composed Chant de Linos for the Solo de Concours at the Paris Conservatoire in 1944. Written for Flute Harp and String Trio this version contains the full score. This piece is quite difficult to execute but will stand out in a competition or a recital. Inspired from what is called a Chant de Linos a threnody (or lament to the dead) in the Greek antiquity this piece is also about Linos son of Apollo. A brilliant musician Linos taught Orpheus the Lyre and got killed by Heracles for excessive criticism. André Jolivet is a French composer whowas greatly inspired by the Antiquity and had a strong interest for atonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces eleven concertos some orchestral and some vocal music.

Russian composer Edison Denisov (1929-1996) was a controversial composer of the nonconformist division of Soviet music. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and his compositions remain popular to this day Deux Pièces for Alto Saxophone and Piano being no exception. Written for the Paris Conservatoire contest Myriades is a piece by François Dupin for Drums and Piano accompaniment. Dedicated to Jacques Delécluse this volume includes score parts and a scheme describing how to organise the Drums in the room. Considered as very difficult (8°) this piece requires some really good knowledge of the instruments and some strong abilities. However this great work is really interesting to play and should be really appreciated by the audience. It can be used for a contest or a recital. François Dupin (1931-1994) is a French musician and composer who studiedat the Paris Conservatoire won First Prizes including for composition and who dedicated his life to teach the Drums.

Maï by Ryo Noda a Japanese composer is a unique piece of work for solo Saxophone that is strongly influenced by Japanese music. With some sonority supposed to be quite close to those of a koto and of a shakuhachi this piece is very technical and complex to play. The story behind this work is about the ghost of a Japanese Samurai. While his wife asks why he let her behind and left to fight in the war he tries to justify his choices. Most of the work depicts the struggle within the mind of the Samurai between ending his life and living in the end of his enemies. The screaming altissimo at the end is the climax of his strugglewhich then followed by a 10 second silence that represents his death. The technical abilities required are: large interval leaps rapid trills alternate fingerings to achieve pitch bending multiphonics altissimo portamento and cutting tone.
