Introductie en variaties over het Dies Irae-De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500 a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv.After the introduction follow five variations in randon order - however each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV) who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013.

Based on Dies Irae-This work is based on the 13th Century Dies irae (Day of Wrath) attributed to Thomas von Celano. Many famous composers have already employed this originally Gregorian chant in their works including Berlioz Saint-Saëns Mahler and Lizst. In Jan de Haan’s Song of David - the title of which is taken from the third line of the Dies Irae text - the theme is presented in unison initially and then reappears in various guises.

The Clarinet Concerto is the highpoint of Satoshi Yagisawa’s ‘Concerto Series’ which also includes Suite Concertante for Piano and Wind Orchestra Trumpet Concerto Trombone Concerto and Saxophone Concertino as well as Concertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra . Yagisawa’s characteristic theme in the second movement enjoys great popularity and is therefore often performed separately as Intermezzo.

Izumi Shibata commissioned the Ballad for Bass Trombone as a unique and thoughtful birthday present for her husband who happens to play this very instrument. Thanks to her gift bass trombone players around the world received a stunning addition to their repertoire.
