Pop Overture for Band- Odilia is an up-tempo and joyful ode to Baume-les-Dames a village in the department of Doubs in Franche-Comté Eastern France.The title is derived from the legend of Odilia of Alsace (venerated as Saint Odilia or Odile) the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. She was born blind and literally saw the light at the age of twelve at the convent of Baume-les-Dames. From this miraculous occurrence she was dubbed Odilia — child of light.Jacob de Haan was inspired by medieval dance music for the opening of this composition. In the slow movement that follows a lyrical minor theme builds to a dramatic climax which is followed by a calm passage featuring the repeatedlyrical theme. Finally the medieval motif returns this time presented in a festive gospel version.

for Soprano Solo and Concert band- Odelettes is the title of a cycle of poems by the 19th-century French writer Gérard de Neval. In his work Trois Odelettes Jacob de Haan set three of de Neval’s poems to music for soprano voice and concert band: Une Allée du Luxembourg describes a fleeting moment of love; Espagne is a typically sounding ode to Spain; and Chanson Gothique describes the joy of life itself.

This composition was written on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the De Pinte wind band. This is also the derivation of Latin title Aureus (golden - from the word aurum or gold). This work is comprised of three main sections. Thefirst and last sections are predominantly a musical setting of the concepts of celebration and joy in keeping with the theme of jubilee. The music is therefore above all dynamic energetic and extrovert. The middle section has a more introspective melodic character contemplating the subtle beauty of life. Aureus is a newly composed chorale that establishes the most important attributes in life and also within a club or association: love friendship health and happiness.

With its exuberant rhythms and lyrical melodic lines the work mirrors the strong bond between theinhabitants of the region and the river itself. The connecting thread is the melody of the well-known ‘An der Weser’ composed by Gustav Pressel to lyrics by Franz von Dingelstedt which has been incorporated in three different ways. The result is acomposition that is sure to be enjoyed by both musicians and audience alike.

Suite for Concert Band-This suite tells the story of John Stewart the Duke of Albany (the old name for the Kingdom of Scotland) who lived from 1484 to 1536 and of Anne de la Tour Countess of Auvergne. The first majestic movement is about John Stewart who leaves for Auvergne in order to marry Anne de la Tour. The second movement begins beautiful and romantic describing the romance between Anne de la Tour and the Duke followed by sounds of despair and loneliness. The celebratory finale describes the construction of a new chapel and the population dancing and celebrating.

Philip Harper has created a fabulous transcription of the energetic third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano concerto No. 3 in D minor. This movement is comprised of variations on a theme from the first movement of the concerto. The final notes would become Rachmaninoff’s musical signature. An outstanding and very spectacular title!
