for Organ and Concert Band-This piece was composed in 2009 for a commission by Shinjuku Bunka Center to commemorate its thirty years since its opening.It is an impressive work with a brilliant bright fanfare and the stately sound of the church organ reverberating through the concert hall. The first performance was given by Hiroko Takahashi a house organist of the center with Shinjuku City Wind Orchestra conducted by Shigeto Ishizu. Original works for church organ and wind orchestra are surprisingly scarce. This is a fresh opening piece to be followed by an organ solo which might lead to a march.

for Concert Band Mixed Choir and Organ (optional)-This Latin mass for choir and wind band was composed in honour of Saint Cecilia’s feast day Saint Cecilia being the patroness of musicians. For this reason many ensembles have annual concerts dedicated to Saint Cecila which was the inspiration forthis piece. It is a festive optimistic but also comforting work which in style perfectly suits the character of Saint Cecilia’s Feast Day. After Missa Brevis Missa Katharina and The Gospel Mass Missa Santa Cecilia isthe fourth published mass by the Dutch composer Jacob de Haan.Choral parts available separately.

Battle of the Somme- Fields of Honour was commissioned by ‘l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Beauquesne’ France and tells the story of the terrifying Battle of the Somme during WW1 with more than one million of victims. The music depicts the events prior to the battle until the time after it. This impressive composition has the structure of a symphonic poem and is highly dramatic and emotional offering challenges to all instrument groups.

This work brings fragments from three of Giuseppe Verdi’s operas together in a single composition. Opening the work is the Triumphal March from Aida . Next come two notable motifs from La forza del destino before the famous Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore . Wil van der Beek’s arrangement for concert band is a rousing hit with opera melodies that everyone knows and loves.

All Glory Be to God on High-Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina a mass for choir soprano and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can at the director’s discretion be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

In Satoshi Yagisawas SAXOPHONE CONCERTINO the solo instrument is integrated with the accompaniment rather than being separate. The romantic-sounding solo chorale in the first half of the work sounds wonderful on the alto saxophone. A lively allegrois heard in the second movement referencing music of the baroque era with the solo now played on the soprano saxophone but by the same soloist. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica . It takes the form of a three-part concert work in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part Musica Prima is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section Musica Sacra offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part Musica Alpina is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.
