Impressions of a Village- Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and appropriately captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.

Albastum is a proud stately concert march written in classic A-B-A form. It opens with a festive fanfare in the brass section followed by a lively bright theme symbolising the joy of playing music together at each weekly rehearsal. Following a melodious trio a counter theme develops and the march comes to an exciting close with a reprise of the original theme.

Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region. The next movement a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost creates will keep the audience engaged through to the very last note!

The well-known melody helped make this 1970’s jazz and pop legend so famous and popular. Peter Kleine Schaars skillfully transforms this classic film theme into an excellent arrangement for concert band featuring the fl ute and trumpet.

Champagne Galop-Hans Christian Lumbye was born in Denmark in 1810 and has become known for his many light-hearted and airy works most commonly waltzes galops polkas mazurkas and marches. The Champagne Galop is without doubt one of the most performed works of this master from the North.

Rafael Hérnandez (1892-1965) was probably the greatest composer in Puerto Rico. After serving in World War I he worked in the USA in Mexico and in Puerto Rico as a musician composer band-leader and actor. Masato Myokoin has written this new exciting arrangement of Rafael Hérnandez’ biggest international hit El Cumbanchero.

COME ONE AND ALL! Come see the great Circus Bamboni! This four movement work with flexible four-part instrumentation (+ drum set) will amaze and charm you like no other. The fi rst movement features the band as it tunes up and prepares for the show. Then the talented trapeze artists make an appearance as they fly through the sky high above the audience. The elephants parade around the ring with their very own Elephant Samba and the clowns follow leaving you in stitches! A thunderous chord and lots of applause bring the show to a breathtaking finale.

The Blue Danube opus 314- An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube Waltz) has had more success as a concert waltz than in the original choral version: since its victorious performance at the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) it has achieved fame world-wide. InAustria An der schönen blauen Donau has even become an unofficial anthem. At the traditional New Year’s concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic this waltz—along with Radetzky March by Johann Strauss the Elder—is always played as anencore.

The melody displays the very best of Irish tradition with the words coming from a poem by Thomas Moore about love that goes above and beyond physical beauty. Irish Charms will make a wonderful inspirational interlude at any concert.

La pierre de vie-The Heaven Tree is based on the fi rst book in an intensely imagined trilogy by author Edith Pargeter. Set during the golden age of cathedral building this adventure novel explores the splendour and cruelty of the Middle Ages. Thierry Deleruyelle’s work is an ideal accompaniment to the novel. With an obvious sense of suspense his music helps us get in touch with a distant reality that brings the past to life.

In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth — inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love — and also tension and the worries — in the adult-child bond through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. The fugue-like ending leads to a final splendid chorale: a picture of proud parents with their child!

The contemporary Lithuanian composer Kazys Daugėla created Festive Rock in celebration of the 2003 Lithuanian national holiday. The premier took place at a concert with not one but two concert bands being eluminated by the many colours of a concert closing firework display. This unforgettable event led to the piece’s popularity among concert bands. Now it can also become a part of your repertoire with or without fireworks!
