for Alto Saxophone and Organ or Piano-The twelve pieces in A Festive Christmas have been arranged for various wind instruments - providing that brilliant sheen so apt at Christmas time. The pieces can be performed with organ or piano accompaniment. Jan and Jacob de Haan looked at many different sources for their inspiration: three pieces were chosen from Handel's oratorios as well as traditional Christmas carols and two Christmas medleys. Every holiday concert will benefit from that special something these dazzling carols provide.

Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region.The next movement a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. Un hommage au sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi- Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort : an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret.The work’s première took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.

This exciting and energetic composition calls on all members of the band to try their best to make the audience jump out of their seats when they hear the fi rst notes. Jan de Haan’s elaboration of two main themes lets the musicians present themselves as truly Triumphal Brass! The work was written as a test piece for the concert program in the Flemish Open Brass Band Championships 2010.

From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. As with his march Fresena Jacob de Haan assimilated a well-known folksong from his province of birth (Friesland) into this swinging composition. Both works originate from a festival suite that he once wrote by order of this province.
