Songs of Praise is a beautiful adaptation of a Netherlands church melody to Psalm 150. The composer Jacob de Haan shows his deft hand at arranging by setting the melody in creative and varied instrumentations. His Songs of Praise is perfectly suited to worship or indeed as a concert intermezzo.

‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely on the other the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Fesival Overture in the summer of 1880 together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially Brahms had sent a thank-you note but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development lyrical warmth humor and persuasiveness the Academic Festival Overtureis still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band which has been written by Tohru Takahashi does justice to the original composition.

The suite is scored for 2 trumpets F horn trombone and tuba and extra parts are included for Eb horn Bb trombone (treble clef) and Eb bass (treble clef).

Grâce à sa structure en cinq mouvements indépendants il est possible d’interpréter l’œuvre dans sa version intégrale ou d’en donner quelques extraits. Tesse Telman a choisi de développer deux lignes mélodiques extraites de deux mouvements de cette suite. Ballad est une ligne fluide et arrondie qui s’apparente à une ballade rock tandis que Dance débute sur un air de danse de la Renaissance avant de se fondre dans un passage pétillant et gracieux.

As with his march Fresena Jacob de Haan assimilated a well-known folksong from his province of birth (Friesland) into this swinging composition. Both works originate from a festival suite that he once wrote by order of this province.

Cette marche fluide et joyeuse écrite en 6/8 s’interprète avec légèreté et souplesse. Structurée selon la forme traditionnelle de la marche Sonority développe un thème mélodieux qui chemine à travers le tissu thématique du trio. Après un passage contrastant joué avec panache le thème du trio est repris une dernière fois.
