The Resounding Passionate Heartbeat-This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the première the composer wrote: “I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here swaying in the west wind. I wrote this hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece.” Eastern drama felt in the west wind!

Banda Bella est une marche de concert pleine de vitalité. Après une ouverture martiale les bois développent un motif bouillonnant. Le trio est dominé par un thème dans le registre ténor qui laisse sa place à un intermezzo dans lequel les cuivres conversent en alternance avec les bois. Le thème du trio revient de manière grandiose sur un chant ornementé aux bois.

In this work the composer portrays what he sees as the typical characteristics of youth his young daughter being a source of inspiration. The music describes different emotions between parents and their child such as parental love proudness andalso some tension. The final movement starts with a fugue based on the first theme leading to the work’s climax where the chorale appears in majestic form.

The source (sauce!) of inspiration for this work was somewhat unusual. Whilst on tour with a youth brass group Kazys Daugėla ate a Piri-Piri salad that had a wickedly hot sauce. He jokingly told his fellow band members that one day he would write a piece to celebrate this mouth watering experience. The result was this Hot and Spicy piece garnished with a light mambo rhythm!

Wine Women and Song op. 333-À l’instar du Beau Danube bleu la valse Wein Weib und Gesang op. 333 ( Aimer boire et chanter 1869) a été composée à l’origine pour le Wiener Männergesangverein (Chœur d’Hommes de Vienne). Johann Strauss s’est inspiré d’une citation attribuée à Martin Luther « Qui n'aime point le vin les femmes ni le chant restera sot toute sa vie » (“Wer nicht liebt Wein Weib und Gesang der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang”).La version originale de Strauss s’ouvre avec un long passage d’ouverture de près de cent mesures ( Quasi religioso suivie d’un Allegro ) très rarement joué. Cette transcription pour Orchestre d’Harmonie en est égalementdépourvue mais débute néanmoins avec une introduction brillante ( Maestoso ) d’où se détache la première ligne mélodique qui revient plus tard dans le quatrième air de valse. Le premier thème représente la quintessence de l’art de vivre viennois ; Strauss s’appuie sur la chanson à boire Stoß an stoß an du Liebchen mein (“Trinquons ma bien-aimée”) extraite de son opérette Wiener Blut (Sang viennois) . Les trois airs qui suivent font également preuve de vivacité et d’élégance. Et bien entendu comme dans toutes les autres valses de concert le thème initial revient dans le passage de fin. Une courte cadence endiablée clôt l’œuvre.

Un hommage au sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi- Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort : an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret.The work’s première took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.

Opus 2 no. 1-En 1885 Edward Elgar est nommé organiste de l’église Saint-George de Worcester. À ce titre il compose de nombreuses œuvres liturgiques. En 1887 il crée un Pie Jesu dans le cadre d'un triptyque comprenant aussi un Ave Maria et l’ Ave Maria Stella . Il remanie la pièce en 1892 et celle-ci devient alors l’ Ave Verum Corpus pour Soprano solo Ténor solo Chœur mixte et Orgue (Opus 2 n°1). Robert van Beringen en a réalisé un arrangement délicat et profond.

Les Anges dans nos campagnes-The title of this clever arrangement reveals the Christmas song it is based on. The melody can be traced back to a French folksong from the 18th century which is now known around the world. In France it is called Les anges dans nos campagnes in Germany it is most widely known as Engel auf den Feldern singen and in England it was originally called Angels From the Realms of Glory but it often known as Angels We Have Heard on High . Everyone will rejoice upon hearing the ‘Gloria in excelsis Deo’ refrain!

As a result of this he was nicknamed ‘The French Strauss’. He composed more than 250 dances the best-known being the waltzes Les patineurs (Ice Skaters) Estudiantina and España. España was composed in 1886 based on the famous 1883 rhapsody of the same name by Emmanuel Chabrier.

Tohru Takahashi's arrangement fully exploits the capabilities of the concert band whilst staying true to the tonal colour and textures of the original. Le style est direct et vigoureux les passages mélodiques sont délicats et élégants. Une œuvre pétillante à quatre voix pour ensemble à instrumentation variable.

Sometimes cool and mysterious sometimes opalescent warm or luminous the colours of time like life itself are ever-changing. When colour materialises it becomes music. With delicate and powerful moods brilliant and intimate textures and joyful and nostalgic sounds music seeps into our memory like stories drawn from many individual real-life experiences.

Latin ABC is a suite in three movements inspired by the music of the Caribbean. The first movement is a joyful Curaçaon waltz the second movement a sensual slow salsa: a style that is popular on the island of Bonaire. Finally Latin ABC culminates with a rousing march that brings the listener to sunny Aruba. This work is suitable for Grade 3 players and showcases the percussion section in particular.
