Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life - she died at 25 - and her music stands in the main line of French music exemplified by Faure somewhat tinged with the influence of Debussy's Impressionism. It is generally beautiful delicately coloured and touching. These challenging 'Two Pieces for Violin and Piano' exemplify these qualities. The Nocturne begins sparsely with bare octave figures wound about with a theme built from a repetitive rise-and-fall figure. As the texture become thickerthe violin becomes more virtuosic and begins to climb. There is no harmonic resolution until the final ppp note in the top register which is answered by an low octave from the piano. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

Score- George Washington Bridge . An impression for Concert Band by William Schuman . ' There are few days in the year when I do not see the George Washington Bridge. I pass it on my way to work as Idrive along the Henry Hudson parkway on the New York shore. Ever since my student days when I watched the progress of its construction this bridge has had for me an almost human personality and this personality is astonishinglyvaried assuming different moods depending on the time of day or night the weather the traffic and of course my own mood as I pass by. I have walked across it late at night when it was shrouded in fog and during thebrilliant sunshine hours of midday. I have driven over it countless times and passed under it on boats. Coming to New York City by air sometimes I have been lucky enough to fly right over it. It is difficult to imagine a moregracious welcome or dramatic entry to the great metropolis '. - William Schuman

These Progressive Sight Reading Exercises by Hannah Smith will help pianists improve their sight reading skills. These exercises are not to be studied. Each is to be played through but once in a tempo slow enough to enable the pupil to read without hesitation. It is presupposed that the technical training as well as the thorough study of good music proceeds regularly with the sight reading.

These thirty sonatas are collectively entitled Essercizi and were the first published works of Scarlatti. They appeared in 1738 and it is a striking biographical fact that previous to this in the composer's 53rd year no Scarlatti compositions exist that would have elevated him to his present level of historical importance. The sonatas are arranged for Solo keyboard.
