Five Incantations for the Piano by Giacinto Scelsi who some consider as the Charles Ives of Italy . These pieces like much of Scelsi's work reflect his interest in Indian mysticism and Islam. They were composed in 1953 and are dedicated to French surrealist poet Henri Michaux.

English Only. Translated by Blatt. Otto Nicolai became one of the few 'one-hit wonders' among classical composers. Although some of his operas had success during his lifetime it is really only his final opera The Merry Wives of Windsor that has become a repertory item but with its storyline wit and an abundance of memorable tunes it is not difficult to understand why. It was a rousing success from its first performance on March 9 1849 and the bubbly overture is still especially popular. The drama takes place in three acts to a libretto by Hermann von Mosenthal the English version being by Josef Blatt.

Italian/English. Ruggiero Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci was his first opera to be performed. The text by the composer is based on one of the cases encountered by Leoncavallo's father a police magistrate in Naples. The actual case concerned amiddle-aged actor who murdered his unfaithful wife. Leoncavallo sets his sordid subject matter to melodic material of high quality and great variety. The heart-rending aria 'Ridi Pagliaccio sul tuo amore infranto!' (Laugh and bemerry though your love betrayed you) has become the most famous number from the opera.

Score-Silvestre Revueltas' ‘Sensemaya’ was written in 1937 for chamber orchestra; one year later the composer transcribed it for a huge orchestra of twenty-seven wind instruments fourteen percussion instruments and strings. The rhythms are laid out precisely and have considerable visceral impact very much in a manner that recalls Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. However Revueltas' masterful orchestration and ability to evoke the ancient Maya civilization with decidedly modern music are uniquely his own. It is a unique orchestral spectacle something only Revueltas could have written and in its way it is one of the most brutal works of its time. The workbegins with a low note in the bassoon as the percussion plays the sinuous syncopated rhythm that drives the work. Soon a solo horn enters playing the first of this work's two major themes a muscular ominous motif. Other horns join the first one to play the theme growing louder and more emphatic but rigorously yoked to the underlying rhythm. Eventually the horns blast as loudly as they can with obsessive trills on the bassoon far underneath and the violins enter with the slashing second theme. The horns take up this new theme and bring it to a climax after which the music returns to its opening texture. This recapitulation brings with it a mood of foreboding. The rhythm becomes even more obsessive and finally the music reaches a massive climax during which both themes are played overlapping sometimes in part and sometimes in whole by woodwinds brass and violins in what sounds like a musical riot. The coda feels like the final dropping of a knife.

Study Score No. 21-Schoenberg composed his Fourth String Quartet Op. 37 on a commission from Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. The four movements of the quartet are based on a single twelve-note row although this is fairly free. The first movement is in an abstract sonata form. Transitions are generally built around a hesitant chromatically sighing theme that first appears in the first violin. Marked Comodo (leisurely) the second movement is an intermezzo in A-B-A form. The recitative-like main theme of the third movement first appears in unison after which individual instruments begin to break away with their own lines. Variation technique is prominent in the rondo finale marked Allegro -transformations of the main theme are so great that it is occasionally difficult to recognize its return. This is the Schirmer edition of the Score to this work.
