Italian/English. Translated by Martin. Long neglected and misunderstood 'Cosi Fan Tutte' (Thus Do All Women) emerged from obscurity in the twentieth century and has come to be regarded as among Mozart's finest works. The Libretto is by Lorenzo da Ponte and tells of two friends Ferrando and Guglielmo who wager with Don Alfonso that their lovers Fiordiligi and Dorabella will remain constant in their absence. To prove the point they depart under false pretences and return as 'Albanians' to try to woo the women away. Each of the six characters receives an equally insightful musical portrayal for example Fiordiligi transcends her role as the victim of cruel manipulation revealing a complex personality that issincere capable of growth and inarguably sympathetic. In contrast Guglielmo never progresses beyond concern for his own ego and interests; his music therefore remains within the stock traditions of opera buffa. The ambigous nature of the ending (who actually loves whom?) can be seen as appropriate given the emotional issues aired during the drama. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English version by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

Self-taught American composer Paul Creston devoted his energies to composition only from 1932 and recgogition was slow to come but when the accolades and honors did arrive they were many and impressive. Creston's music is distinctly tonal in the modern American idiom and possessed of a strong rhythmic sense. This 'Concertino' is approximately 15 minutes long. Reduction for marimba and piano. Orchestral parts are available on rental from G. Schirmer.

German/English. Translated by Cardelli. Mozart's little-known one-act comic opera 'The Impresario' was commissioned by the Emperor Joseph II of Austria for a winter party he was giving. The libretto by Johann Gottleib Stephanie (The Younger) is about the tribulations of an impresario trying to mount a performance of an opera so it is likely Mozart hard at work on 'The Marriage of Figaro' derived a certain wry satisfaction from setting it. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English adaptation by Giovanni Cardelli.

Score- At the turn of this century it was the habit of all the royal families of Europe to gather annually for social and state occasions. The great houses of England Austria Spain Germany Russia Sweden Denmark Italy et al were in reality one clan since royal blood was only bred to royal blood in those days. At these fashionable assemblies matches were made courtships begun hunts were staged balls dinners and receptions filled thenights and intrigue was rampant. Sarajevo a city in central Yugoslavia provided the setting for the royal outing in the spring of 1914. Pomp and splendor attended the ruling heads of state who officiated at ceremonies and ledparades. All this magnificence is captured in Morton Gould 's ' Sarajevo Suite ' written originally for a CBS documentary television series entitled 'World War I.' This adaptation for Concert Band wasmade from the composer's original score by Louis Brunelli.

French/English. Translated by Ducloux. Gluck's 'Orfeo et Euridice' was one of three operas composed by Gluck in an attempt to reform the Italian opera seria. The libretto is noble and grand and this must have inspired Gluck for his approach to the score is also monumental as well as orchestral in nature. The opera opens after the death of Euridice to a funereal choral tableau which is pierced by the cries of the anguished Orfeo. Huge dramatic choruses of shades and furies contrast starkly with the solo recitatives and arias of Orfeo as he searches for Euridice. The third act is particularly beautiful as Gluck and Calzabigi turn the shade of Euridice into a complex lover and wife unwilling tofollow her husband blindly out of Hades even though she has been called back to life. Her arguments and pleadings her passion and confusion create the torment in Orfeo that results in her being sent back to hell. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with English words by Walter Ducloux taking precedance over the French original.
