For Tenor and Chamber Orchestra. Stephen Albert 's Into Eclipse for Tenor and Chamber Orchestra. Full score. ' Into Eclipse is based on Ted Hughes' adaptation of Seneca's Oedipus. The five episodes chosen astexts for this musical setting form an abbreviated version in song of this Roman dramatisation of the Oedipus myth . Seneca's play has no external action. As Peter Brook informs us in his introduction to the play '...it takes place nowhere...possibly it was read aloud in the bathhouse to friends.' It therefore seemed possible to take the essential elements of the tale and transform them into a rather complete musical statement that wasnon-theatrical yet dramatic in its own terms. Into Eclipse is thus not a monodrama nor even a solo oratorio but rather a 'Herosong.' It is somewhat in the tradition but not of course in the manner of earlyballadeers and minstrels who often set ancient stories and myths to music and performed these musical narratives for both court and country village . The story is sung from different viewpoints (that of Creon thechorus of citizens and of course Oedipus the king) all encompassed within the bounds of one man's voice and his complement of instruments. There is no concious attempt to 'paint' or emphasise particular words or phrases withinthe text nor was there an effort to musically heighten Seneca's already nightmarish vision with its withering onslaught of bloodthirsty images. To do so seemed to risk weighing down the cycle in a morbid atmosphere one filledwith caricature and the grotesque .' - Stephen Albert The full-Orchestra version of Into Eclipse was premiered on September 8 1986 by the Seattle Symphony with Gary Lakes Tenor andGerard Schwarz conductor. It is also available in a version for Tenor and Chamber Ensemble [Flute/Piccolo Clarinet/Piccolo Clarinet Horn Trumpet Percussion (2 players) Harp Piano and Strings]. This version was premiered on

German/English. Wagner's sense of what he wanted to do with the Ring drama changed by the time he returned to Siegfried. When he began the Ring he had clearly seen Siegfried as the hero of the drama but the desire to more fully explore Wotan'spredicament impelled him to expand the project. Siegfried and Mime quarrel Siegfried demands that the sword Nothung be mended but Mime cannot do so much to his own chagrin – he wants to win the Ring back for himself. TheWanderer – a disguised Wotung tells Mime that Nothung can be forged only by one who has never known fear. This is Siegfried and he repairs the sword himself smashing the anvil as he leaves to reclaim the Ring. He arrives atFafner’s lair and kills him. As he dies Fafner warns that whoever put Siegfried up to this deed is plotting his death as well. From the The Forest Bird Siegfried learns of the Nibelung hoard the Tarnhelm and all-powerful Ring and also of Brünnhilde who sleeps on a fire-encircled rock - a bride who can be won only by a hero who knows no fear. Mime and Alberich (who had recognised the Wanderer and heeded his warning to fear Mime) quarrel over thespoils withdrawing when Siegfried reappears carrying the Tarnhelm and the Ring. Mime tries to persuade Siegfried to take a cup of poisoned drink and Siegfried kills him. Siegfried sets out to climb the mountain. He meetsWotan who asks him about his exploits but the youth splinters the Wanderer's spear with a single stroke of Nothung. Wotan realises he is old and must go to Valhalla but bequeaths the world to the redemptive power ofBrünnhilde's love. Siegfried goes on to the top of the mountain where he discovers an armed sleeping figure – the first woman he has ever seen. At last sensing fear he summons the courage to kiss her. Brünnhilde roused from herlong slumber realises that Siegfried has come. Throwing herself into Siegfried's arms she bids farewell to Valhalla and abandons herself to human love.
