Although composing was his main occupation he was a distinguished conductor. The pieces are decptively simple in texture with strict unison rhythms reflecting their stately dance originsbut hiding some beautifully rich harmonies that are revealed when four hands are at the keyboard.

This Sonata begins with an Allegro ben moderato featuring a high melody played pianissimo in triple time. The piano comes to the fore in the second movement marked Allegro though it has a slower middlesection. A short 'Recitativo-Fantasia' has both instruments really integrating and playing off each other then fading to nothing whereas the last movement Allegretto poco mosso is loud and declamatory with a persistentmelody.
