This Suite was originally written for Flute (or Recorder) and Strings: it is here arranged for Flute and Piano edited by Louis Moyse. It stands out amongst Telemann's work for its cosmopolitan sampling of the various styles of music known to the composer. It contains a pair of French Menuets two Passepieds from Brittany a Polish Polonaise and an Air à l'italienne . For good measure Telemann throws in two quasi-illustrative movements describing Les plaisirs and a Réjouissance respectively. The Overture is perhaps the best-known part of the work and is remarkable for its almost processional feel and itreappears as the Conclusion at the suite's end. This diversity of styles and means fits well the template of a suite but the unifying intelligence behind all of them is definitely that of Telemann.

Composer's Note My Etude Fantasy is actually a set of five studies combined into the episodic form and character of a fantasty. The material in the studies is related most obviously by the interval of a second (and its inversion and expansion to sevenths and ninths) which is used both melodically and in the building of the work's harmonic structure. Italian/English. Translated by Martin. The libretto for Giuseppe Verdi's 'Rigoletto' was adapted by Francesco Maria Piave from Victor Hugo's play Le roi s'amuse which was so controversial it had been banned in Paris after one performance. It is still recognised as one of Verdi's finest scores. The opening of the final act contains two of the most famous pieces in all opera: the Duke's 'La donna e mobile' (which needs no introduction) and the famous quartet 'Bella figlia dell'amore ' in which each character is expressing a different emotion. This edition is in Italian with an English version by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

French/English. Translated by Martin. Although almost unanimously condemned by contemporary Parisian critics for its overt sexuality and graphic final scene Carmen ultimately reached the public in a way that perhaps no other opera has. Bizet's aim (with Meilhac and Halevy who wrote the libretto) had been to transform the flaccid moralistic bourgeois genre of opéra comique into a more sophisticated type of staged work and he seems to have suceeded in Carmen. Each character has a musical significance and a unique expressive idiom the ultimate example being the dangerous exotic sensual Carmen herself depicted by an exotic and sinewy chromatic motive that also implies the insurmountable power of fate. Ina classic plot device she is contrasted with the 'good girl' of the opera Micaela whose main aria is set in the ternary form of the elevated bel canto French Grand Opera aria to imply her traditionally 'ladylike' retiring nature. Don José's musical styles reflect different levels in his descent from dutiful soldier to the underworld of obsession. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

Set of Parts-for Soprano Celesta and Percussion. The Moment (Op. 52 1962) takes its text from a poem of the same title by the English poet and scholar Kathleen Raine (1908-2003). It has been set to music by the Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt (1915-2014) scored for a chamber ensemble of Soprano Celesta and Percussion. Knut Nystedt studied under Aaron Copland among others and spent a long and distinguished career composing arranging conducting singing and playing the organ adapting to changing musical styles without sacrificing his own distinctiveness. He often drew inspiration from medieval music and Gregorian chants. He is remembered for having made an indelible contributionto Norwegian music and culture.

Study Score No. 42-For piano and orchestra. With this 1913 work Ernest Bloch inaugurated his so-called 'Jewish cycle' though apart from an emphasis on the augmented second (characteristic of cantorial melody) these poems are not particularly 'Jewish' and the work is not pictorial or dramatic but philosophical. Bloch describes the Danse as somber mystical languorous A nervous passionate theme announced at the beginning shoots through the entire movement. Of the Rite Bloch wrote This music is more emotional but there is something solemn and distant as in the ceremonies of a cult. The opening the most pictorial passage in the work conjures up the vision of a long solemn procession butit quickly moves to music of great consolation--as if to suggest the healing power of ritual. The last movement Cortege Funebre continues the mood of the second but gradually grief overpowers ritual until the orchestra seems to howl. The toment subsides to a mutter out of which comes yet another song of acceptance and serenity which proceeds to a noble close. This is a miniature score for study purposes.

Latin. Gian Carlo Menotti is frequently considered to be the greatest composer of American opera in the twentieth century. The Missa O Pulchritudo uses the Roman Catholic text for the Mass except for the Credo which is replaced by a Motet based on the words of St. Augustine. There is some occasional part-splitting in the chorus. This is the Schirmer Edition of the vocal score and includes a Piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment. (These orchestral parts are available on rental from G. Schirmer).
