Alice Changes by Tarik O'Regan is a short piece for solo Violin composed for Thomas Gould. The work progresses through a series of increasingly intricate figurations which sit on top of the same underlying chord progression found in Charlie Parker’s Blues for Alice (1951). A variation of the twelve-bar blues this harmonic sequence goes by several names such as: “Bird blues” “Bird changes” or “Alice changes” . Thomas Gould premiered Alice Changes at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London on 30 March 2014. Alice Changes by Tarik O'Regan is a short piece for solo Violin composed for Thomas Gould. Lines of Desire is a term attributed by architects and planners to the routes that evolve over time which people instinctively take through open space rather than those marked by paths or pavements. This short work for piano invokes that progression. The melodic ideas are not guided by any particular form or structure; they grow by nature not nurture.

There exists already and abundant supply of original compositions and arrangements suitable for performance on large and comprehensive organs but many organists who have only a small instrument at their disposal in country churches often have some difficulty in finding short and easy voluntaries suitable for their own use and the instruction of their pupils. It is hoped that The Village Organist may supply this want so much felt by that valuable and zealous class of church-workers to whom the work is inscribed. The editors have endeavoured to bring together a collection of pieces which they trust will prove to be at once simple without being uninteresting and effective where the instrumental resources are limited.

As the title suggests my Serenata Notturna evokes the atmosphere of night music. Following a reflective opening where the pitch development outlines a twelve-note series the music gradually becomes more agitated developing into a kind of danse macabre eventually reaching a powerful climax. The music then subsides into a much more tranquil atmosphere and the previous dissonant material transposes itself into a simple melody (like a lullaby) uttered by the cello the outline of which both melodically and in terms of the accompaniment figuration has already been present in the piece since the beginning. Thus the turmoil of the first part of the work becomes transfigured intosomething much more peaceful - hence the quotation that prefaces the score: 'out of darkness cometh light'.
