Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures Woodland Sketches that has survived as his best-known work with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for concert band.

Having studied the Flute with virtuosos Paul Taffanel Adolphe Hennebains and Philippe Gaubert at the Paris Conservatoire Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) soon became a virtuoso of the instrument himself. During his career Moyse frequently played solo Flute with many orchestras including performing the main concertos of the repertory. As well as performing and composing Moyse was responsible for the training of a brilliant generation of flautists at the Paris Conservatoire. Following WWI thecomposer moved to the United States where he continued to perform compose and teach. It is during his time in the USA that Moyse composed his extensive number of instructive books on instrumental technique including Soussmann's 24 Daily Studies which today remain universally accepted and popular. Fantasia transcribed for violoncello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus- Born in Erfurt the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827–1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini. Both appear here in their original version for Violin and Piano and for the first time in a transcription for Cello and Piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus. The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics andpizzicato. It (BA 10693) can be mastered by young Cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position. The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves. On the Cello (BA 10694) the student must be able to play in first to fourth position. Both violinists and cellists should have completed volume 4 of Early Start on the Violin and Early Start on the Cello respectively in order to master this work. - Popular recital pieces for young violinists and cellists. - Both works form an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus Early Start methods. - Pieces originally scored for Violin now also available for the first time for Cello. from The Four Noble Truths- The Four Noble Truths was commissioned by the Dutch National Brass Band Championships for their 2003 competition. The Four Noble Truths are the most basic expression of the teaching of Buddha and therefore still form the guidelines for Buddhists to this day. They concern themselves with Dukkha which has no exact translation but can mean suffering stress or sadness etc. Magga is The Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Dukkha - the Fourth Noble Truth - which gives us a description of eight disciplines which can help us eliminate the origins of stress from our lives.

Livre 1- Urtext edition based on the latest state of research. Includes fingering with additional specific exercises Detailed foreword (Ger/Eng) and critical commentary (Eng). Debussy links the 12 Préludes in his first book not by a tonal scheme but by means of a chain of associative mottos or titles which appear at the end of each piece and which may give a hint of the overall poetic content. The musicologist Thomas Kabisch who specialises in Debussy ’s Piano music has edited this Urtext edition based on the latest research findings resulting in an authoritative publication. The edition has a clear layout practical page-turns and fingering bythe experienced teacher Martin Widmaier professor of Piano at the Robert Schumann University Düsseldorf. This fingering traces musical lines and supports sensitive sound production. There are also special fingering exercises to assist in the learning of the chordal structures. Thus the edition provides the necessary prerequisites for studying these works.

The Moravian Duets written to Moravian folk songs with Piano accompaniment were instigated by Jan Neff an influential wholesale merchant in Prague who employed Dvorak as a Piano teacher for his family. The composer first wrote Three Duets for Soprano and Tenor with Piano accompaniment Op.20. The Neff family were delighted with them and so Dvorak continued with cycles II and III Op.32 this time for female voices. The entire collection culminated in 1877 with another four duets with Piano accompaniment published as Op.38. Instead of a simple arrangement of folk melodies Dvorak created duets based on folktexts with their own musical setting. This opus contributed significantly to the success and familiarity of the composer's work abroad. This title is the critical edition based on the composer's manuscript. Piano Sonata No.5 was written in 1974. Stylistically it moves on from works completed in the 1960s which betray a synthesis of Fišer 's own musical language and the stimuli of New Music. With the exception of the final passage the sonata exclusively applies the mode B flat-B-C-C sharp-F-F sharp-G which was first used in a narrowed six-note form in 1965 in Fifteen Prints after Dürer's Apocalypse. Formally the piece is arranged into short contrasting sections which are created from brief repetitive ostinato motifs. With minimal use of thematic and expressive material the composer achieves effective dramatic abbreviation of the kind whichculminated in works from the 1960s. This musical treatment is abandoned only in the final lyrical part which anticipates the future development of Fiser 's musical language leading to its simplification and overall dramatic reduction. Piano Sonata No.5 was first published in 1996 by Bärenreiter Editio Supraphon Prague in a re-print of a transcription provided by the Czech Music Fund in whose preparation the composer was also involved at the time. The new edition consistently adheres to this authorised copy of the work while confining itself to the correction of several apparent omissions and errors.

Exploiting the Flute to its full potential Fantaisie Italienne is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced flautist's repertoire. From cadenza passages to a delightful 6/8 melody this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the Flute's possibilities. The piece begins with an emotional characterised cadenza covering a wide range. This leads dramatically into a 6/8 section accompanied by broken chords in the piano before ending with a quirky and lively 2/4 secton. Bozza 's Fantaisie Italienne for Flute and Piano is not only symbolic but also includes exciting challenges making for an imperative performance piece in the Flute repertoire.
