Solitude Trilogy takes for its title that of a series of three radio documentaries made by Canadian pianist Glenn Gould for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation between 1967 and 1977 (The Idea of North The Latecomers & The Quiet in the Land). One might describe each of these documentaries as 'contrapuntal radio' for the recordings of the interviewees are edited by Gould to overlap and run simultaneously for long periods of time. Twentieth century composer Carey Blyton may have been most famous for his song Bananas in Pyjamas which later became a hit children’s television show and for his many works of incidental music for television programs but he is primarily celebrated for bijou miniatures like this set of five humorous songs.Two of the songs are freely acknowledged to be based on the work of others -- John Dowling and Giles Farnaby – and the rest are in Carey’s own modern melodic style. The entire cycle lasts approximately five minutes.

This fishy tale may well be Sicilian in origin. If you have never sung in Italian before you may find the words of the chorus tongue-twisting at first but Italian is such a delicious language to pronounce that with practice the words will trip off the tongue. Fédéri would appear to be the sailor's name; it has overtones of loyalty and trust ('fede' in Italian means 'faith').

The ten works in Eric H Thiman's A Collection of Organ Music include Trumpet Tune and Air A Simple Air Chorale Intermezzo March for a Pageant A Country Tune A Christmas Pastorale On an Irish Air Elegia and Sortie. Many of the pieces fall within the abilities of moderately accomplished musicians.Eric Thiman was a 20th century composer teacher and Organist who was also an advocate of amateur music-making. He was a prolific composer of church music and Piano and Organ works and his craftsmanship and gift for melody were much admired. He was director of music at the City Temple in London. As an educator he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and he wrote manybooks on harmony counterpoint and musical form.

Five well-known Christmas carols simply arranged in Latin American style for classroom ensemble of virtually any size with the optional addition of guitar drum kit or rhythm instruments. They will sound effective simply using xylophones and glockenspiels but recorders flutes or violins may be added if available. The various possibilities are endless and the teacher should plan out each arrangement in advance with consideration of the instruments available the availability of individual players and so on. Invariably though the simplest treatment of the arrangement is the most effective.

The feel-good classic What a Wonderful World was first recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1968. His version was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Gerard Schurmann (b. 1924) is a Dutch contemporary composer who was born in the Dutch East Indies and lived in England from childhood before setting in the USA in 1981. His orchestral works span 5 decades and he remains in demand for commissions today. The single-movement Cello Concerto The Gardens of Exile was first performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in March 1991. It received immediate critical acclaim with one reviewer calling it “an extraordinarily fine and imaginative composition”. It features a tense orchestral build up before the Cello enters gradually emerging from the texture and taking control of the music.
